The area on the western shore of Lake Lungern has always been a much-admired and very scenic region. In earlier years, before the cable car was built, the area was shaped mainly by alpine farming in summer. In winter, the people of Lungern used it for ski touring. After the turbulence surrounding the cable car in recent years, the area threatened to sink back into a Sleeping Beauty slumber. The efforts of a group of investors to put the first section, the Lungern–Turren aerial tramway, back into operation, and, among other things, to build a hotel/restaurant on the Turren, now offer the opportunity to bring the sun terrace of Schönbüel back to life as well.

A group of locals from Lungern wants to preserve the Berghaus on Schönbüel and run it as a simple mountain hut (similar to a Swiss Alpine Club hut). By preserving the Berghaus on Schönbüel, this local recreation area remains accessible to both tourists and residents. The concept fully complies with the structure plan and promotes gentle tourism without ifs or buts. A cooperative was founded in early September 2015 to take over and operate the Berghaus.
